In a nutshell: Nvidia is paying homage to one of the most influential video games of all time with a new piece of hardware. Additionally, the previously announced RTX remake now has a Steam page, though it still lacks a specific release date.
Valve released Half-Life 2 on November 16, 2004, forever changing the gaming industry. Now, one of the greatest video games ever made turns 20, and Nvidia is celebrating this milestone with new hardware and gaming updates. The iconic first-person shooter will soon receive its “RTX” remake, and one fortunate gamer will have the chance to experience it on a custom Ada Lovelace GPU.
Nvidia is hosting a contest for a one-of-a-kind GeForce RTX 4080 Super card, specially customized with graphics from the Half-Life 2 RTX modding project. Users can enter the Half-Life 2 anniversary sweepstakes by following Nvidia on Facebook and other social media platforms. Full terms and conditions are outlined in the official sweepstakes rules.
The Half-Life 2 RTX remake is being developed by Orbifold Studios, with modders and Half-Life fans collaborating to remaster the graphics assets and other elements of the beloved classic. The developers have essentially rebuilt the game almost from scratch, adding extra geometric details and implementing support for Nvidia’s latest graphics technologies, such as ray tracing, DLSS 3, Reflex, and more.
Despite being a free, community-driven modification, Half-Life 2 RTX has clearly received approval from both Nvidia and Valve. The GPU maker introduced the project in 2023, showcasing the capabilities of the RTX Remix modding platform with the latest generations of GeForce GPUs.
Half-Life 2 RTX does not yet have a release date, but fans can wishlist the project on its official Steam page. According to the developers at Orbifold Studios, Half-Life 2 RTX will be a free DLC for all Half-Life 2 owners, leveraging the latest version of RTX Remix and other Nvidia technologies to transform this award-winning classic into a truly modern gaming experience.
As for the custom GPU, scalpers and compulsive buyers need not worry – Nvidia is offering only a single Half-Life 2 RTX-themed GeForce RTX 4080 Super card. The card, reportedly valued at $2,014, is a true collector’s item. Gordon Freeman better rise and shine in full 60 FPS glory on that masterpiece.
