In context: After winning the PC platform and dedicated home consoles, the licensed retro gaming business is now gunning for the handheld market. Super Pocket portable mini-consoles added two new models with the Atari and Technos editions, each with a carefully curated classic game library.
HyperMega Tech launched its first Super Pocket handhelds last year, with two distinct models focused on Capcom and Taito games. Now, the company has added two new variants to the Super Pocket line, providing officially licensed games developed by Atari and Technos. Each contains games from both home console and arcade markets.
HyperMega says Super Pocket devices bring authentic arcade game experiences to the palm of your hand. As a retro-gaming purist, my heart refuses to consider “authentic” something devoid of a big screen and a proper arcade stick.
Super Pocket’s standard specifications include a 2.8-inch, 320×240 IPS screen, which should work in any lighting conditions, with up to four hours of battery life. The Game Boy-inspired design also provides a 3.5-inch headphone jack, a USB-C charging port, a traditional D-pad, and six action buttons.
Each Super Pocket includes several select titles. However, users can extend the retro fun with Evercade cartridges. The newly introduced Super Pocket Atari Edition contains 50 classic games from the legendary US game maker. The potable contains arcade gems like Centipede and Asteroids and several titles from Atari’s various home consoles, including the Atari Lynx handheld.
The Technos Super Pocket model primarily focuses on arcade games released by the once-famous but now-defunct Japanese studio, founded in 1981 by three former Data East employees. The handheld includes 15 highly acclaimed console and arcade titles, including the three main arcade games in the Double Dragon series, the unlicenced 3D version of Tetris called Blockout, and more.
Like the previously released Capcom and Taito variants, the new Super Pocket models are compatible with Evercade cartridges, expanding each device’s library to over 500 games. HyperMega Tech has multiple game collections on cartridges sold separately at $20 each.
HyperMaga launches the Atari and Technos Super Pocket handhelds next week through several retailers for $60 each. Amazon has already opened pre-orders.
